This past summer was so full of DAR events and activities I never found the spare minutes needed to write a blog post. July started with this officer meeting with Sue Barry, Star of Destiny Chapter, at the National Archives to review a collection of early Texas records. The delegates at State Conference will have an opportunity to decide if we would like to pursue digitizing the collection.
This officer also met with the new Human Resources Director at NSDAR Headquarters and First Vice President General, Pamela Wright to tour the Human Resources offices. These offices are in need of updating (paint, carpet and upholstery) and the delegates at State Conference 2020 will consider taking on the project.
July 12 and 13 was the first State Executive Board meeting held in the new Fall Forum hotel in Austin. The officers, along with Fall Forum hotel coordinators, had a tour of the hotel space.
In mid-July this officer met with the Development Director at Prairie View A&M University to update the scholarship. The original terms of the scholarship specified it would go to a student studying a specific certification. The certification is no longer offered by the university, so an alternate certification was found, and a new agreement signed.
This officer had the pleasure of attending the District VIII and District I workshops in July and District V and District IX workshops in August along with the Texas Gulf Coast Regents Council meeting and the Montgomery Lineage Fair.
In late August this officer decided to try a change of scenery and spent two weeks in Florida where she spent 95% of her time on the computer working on Fall Forum plans and proofing the State Annual Proceedings. The resort was without Internet so this officer spent hours at the local McDonalds connecting to their WiFi in the hopes the resort Internet would be repaired quickly. After two days at McDonalds a trip was made to AT&T to add a hotspot to her cellular plan so she could continue working at the resort.
Fall Forum was wonderful in our new venue. It was a joy to meet with so many of those attending as they worked on the 4×4 service projects. There was so much to see and do this year with the expanded space. Your Fall Forum team is reviewing the survey results and we take your input very seriously. We will continue make changes to improve everyone’s Fall Forum experience.
As we look forward to cooler temperatures this Fall please start planning your celebrations for the 125th Anniversary of the beginning of TXDAR. October 4th is the 125th Anniversary of Florence Clark being appointed the first State Regent of Texas. At State Conference 2020 we will be celebrating the 125th Anniversary. Please make plans now to attend as our President General, Denise VanBuren, will be joining us for the celebration. The hotel reservation block will be opening soon.
I wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving.
